After the war
Following World War I, most of Europe was in economic chaos as well as social unrest. The years following the war were ones of poverty and unemployment, whether it be the United States or Germany, it was everywhere. The unstable economic and political system in Germany gave rise to radical right wing parties in Weimar Germany following democracy's destabilization. Though many fought political powers, the war most definitely brought about political transformation. World War I also brought about the dissolution of the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires, thus creating new small states in Eastern Europe mostly for those seeking refuge after the war had ended.
The Unites States wasn't much better off than Europe, with the Great Depression in full swing, most middle class families had their personal savings wiped out and became unemployed. Though most were worried and basically lost on what to do next, public opinion favored a return to Isolationism; due to the Senate's refusal to ratify the Versailles Treaty and approve U.S. membership in the League of Nations. These terrible years inspired many novels relating to life during and after the war, one of which was written by German author, Hans Fallada. The novel spoke of an average German citizen getting caught up in the terrible economic situation, unemployment and being drawn into radical politics, all worries at the time. Though the war had terrible consequences after the fact, it would only take a few years for another equally as bad war to come about.
